In 2005 i was asked by Krien Clevis, curator and fellow artist, to be one of the dutch representatives for the ‘Gemini Muse’ project. The project exchanges young professional artists within European countries with the assignment to give an answer to ‘old’ art in museums. The task given was to give an answer to the works in the Para Museum in Istanbul, Turkey.
The painting of Abdurrahim Effendi (Fausto Zonaro, 1854-1929) youngest son of the last ruling Ottoman family, struck the most. A young boy, seven years old, in a military costume. But his eyes want to play…
I made him a rocking horse, fitting his royal, military task, but instantly making him harmless and a playing child, like he should be. The pattern of the textile is based on a traditional Muslim pattern, but build up from both real and toy weaponry.
The title ‘Use under adult supervision’ is clearly a comment on the weapons, the use of the horse and the boy…
